Jeff joined the Conservative Party in 1977 and has held various posts at local, regional (Merseyside County Chairman, North West Area Chairman) and national level (National Vice Chairman) in the Young Conservatives.
Jeff Green has been the Leader of the Conservative Group on Wirral Borough Council since 2002. He was first elected as a Ward Councillor in 1986, since when he has continued to serve the residents of West Kirby, Caldy, Grange, Newton and Thurstaston.
Jeff has been Leader of Wirral Borough Council for two periods: May 2010 – May 2011 and February 2012 – May 2012. In May 2010, Jeff became the first Conservative Leader of Wirral Council for 24 years. He led a Progressive Partnership of Conservative and Liberal Democrat Councillors.
As Leader, Jeff championed and introduced a number of innovative actions including Wirral’s Future ‘Be a Part of it’, a massive public consultation on the priorities for the future of Council services and expenditure in Wirral. This consultation informed the Council’s budget setting process and enabled Council spending to be reduced by £58 million.
Through Jeff’s dynamic leadership compulsory redundancies were avoided, despite a total reduction in the level of council employees by 1182, and a freeze on Council Tax was implemented as well as a reduction in the Council’s debts by £10 million.
In 2012 Jeff was able to deliver a rebate equivalent to a 3% cut in Council Tax thereby injecting an additional £4 million into the local economy along with the opportunity for householders to spread their Council Tax over twelve months. Now as Leader of the Conservative Group he continues to pursue and support policies which benefit all those who live and work in Wirral.
He is an active member of a number of Council committees, including Chairman of the Hilbre Island Management Committee and is a former Governor of West Kirby Grammar School and Calday Grange Grammar School.
Jeff has lived in Wirral all his life and is married to Carol, a former headteacher. Outside of politics he supports Everton Football Club and enjoys watching cricket and playing a round of golf when commitments allow.
