Following the appalling terrorist attacks by Hamas, Councillors submitted an emergency motion at Monday's Council meeting, requesting all-party support to share the Borough's outrage at the killings, and solidarity with the people of Israel.
After a vote of councillors, with only the Green Party's 13 councillors voting against, it was agreed the Council would write to Israel's Ambassador to the UK, Tzipi Hotovely.
'Council wishes to express its absolute horror at the terrorist attacks across Israel, which began on Saturday morning.
'Council requests the Leader of the Council and Party Leaders to write to Israel’s Ambassador to the UK, Tzipi Hotovely, expressing our deepest sympathy for all those who were murdered and confirms Council’s continuing support for Israel’s right to exist and defend itself.'
The emergency motion was proposed by Conservative Group Leader Cllr Jeff Green and seconded by the Leader of the Council, Cllr. Paul Stuart.
During a visit to Finchley United Synagogue, the Prime Minister said:
As the Prime Minister of this country, I am unequivocal. The people who support Hamas are fully responsible for this appalling attack. They are not militants. They are not freedom fighters. They are terrorists. And their barbaric acts, are acts of evil.
In a letter to Chief Constables, Home Secretary Rt Hon Suella Braverman, said:
There can be no place for antisemitism or glorification of terrorism on the streets of Britain. I therefore expect the police to use the full force of the law against displays of support for Hamas, other proscribed terrorist groups or attempts to harass and intimidate British Jews.
Meanwhile, the Board of Deputies of British Jews has written to the BBC stating their dismay at the Corporation's refusal to use the word 'terrorist' to define Hamas. They are calling for an urgent review of BBC guidelines so that reporting is in line with UK Government Policy.
