While Birkenhead MP Mick Whitley fights Alison McGovern for his job, the latest figures (May 2023) show that 3,115 people across the Birkenhead constituency are out of work and receiving 'out of work benefits', mainly Universal Credit.
The figures are down from the most recent peak of 5,385 people in May 2020 during the pandemic. At the same time:
- Job vacancies in Birkenhead and within 5 miles are 1,628
- Gross weekly pay for full time workers in Birkenhead rose to £577
- The number of businesses is 3,260, up by 625 since Labour left office
