Following news that £64 million is to be invested in thousands of grassroots sports facilities, Wirral Council is now asking for views on the creation and refurbishment of PlayZones across the Borough.
40% of the funding announced in May is being used to support multi-sport facilities, ensuring a wide range of sports are supported and helping to deliver benefits beyond football.
Now, the council has the opportunity to apply for funding for PlayZones - high quality facilities for sports such as football, netball, rugby, hockey and basketball.
Cllr Helen Cameron, Chair of Tourism, Communities, Culture and Leisure Committee for Wirral Council, said: “This is an exciting opportunity for members of Wirral communities to share their ideas about improving our local sports, recreation and leisure offer.
“The PlayZone Programme is looking to invest in tackling the many problems caused by physical inactivity by funding community-led spaces, which could mean improving existing facilities or creating entirely new ones from scratch.
“People are more likely to take part if they’ve been included in the development of these spaces, so who better to say where these efforts should be focused than those who live here and the community groups that support them.”
Speaking in May, Robert Sullivan, CEO, Football Foundation said: "Thanks to investment from the Premier League, The FA and Government, the Football Foundation is directing more money than ever into supporting the grassroots game. Every one of the facilities we fund will provide equal access for women and girls. That means providing safe, accessible and inclusive environments for women and girls from their journey to the site right up to their first step onto the pitch."
The consultation will be open for comments from all residents from Monday 14 August, closing on Monday 25 September.
Local clubs, groups and council partners can take part here.
